Crocheted Yellow Swirlies and Twirlies and Squiggles Art Afghan
This bright yellow afghan is embellished with swirlies and twirlies and squiggles, oh my. Size: 45 x 54 inches large enough to display on a twin size bed (and keep warm under), cuddle and pet it while watching tv, or hang it on your wall. Care instructions: because of the variety of yarns and fiber content, hand wash and dry flat. Technical details: i used a combination of surface crochet and tambour work on a crocheted mesh base to create the swirls and squiggles. This piece is one of what i call my doodles. I have also seen in the literature this method called organic crochet. The design process starts with a vision and a theme in this case swirls. I then gather a large quantity of yarn in the color range of my vision as many types and textures as the stash will provide. I play with laying them out in different juxtapositions until the layout starts to make sense. Then i back off and think about the structural requirements of the planned item. Sometimes i make a thumbnail sketch depending on the complexity, other times none seems needed. Then i start crocheting, creating each section to match the vision. Each yarn has unique characteristics and may modify the detail of an element as the work progresses. When the visualized parts are completed, a final finishing is added. This process insures that the piece is unique, one of a kind, since the stash never contains exactly the same combination of yarns. The vision is also different every time. A college aesthetics class taught that art is whatever the art community decrees to be art. And who is this mythical, mystical art community a group of recognized, talented artists no-o. The art community is the critics and reviewers who consider themselves the arbiters of art. And what is a craft overheard at a crafts fair: a craft is art that serves a functional purpose. Quilters are allowed to produce art quilts of any size, weavers produce wall hangings, so why not crocheters, too.
